Simple ways to treat psoriasis on the scalp

Psoriasis is an autoimmune (immune system mediated) disease that causes raised, scaly and red patches to appear on the skin. It usually affects the outside of the knees, elbows or scalp, though it can appear in any location. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF), scalp psoriasis is the most well documented of all as it affects more than half of people who have psoriasis. This condition is often very mild with slight, fine scaling. However, it can also be severe with thick, crusted plaques that cover the entire scalp. Besides intense itching and discomfort, scalp psoriasis can trigger feelings of emotional stress due to visible flakes and plaques. It is said that there is no definite treatment for psoriasis; however, some simple remedies can reduce its occurrence or at least help subside its annoying symptoms.

Eat with your health in mind

Diet plays a huge role in managing psoriasis. Eliminating fatty snacks and red meat may help reduce flare-ups that can be triggered by consuming such foods. Cold water fish, nuts, seeds, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are known for their ability to ease psoriasis by reducing inflammation. Olive oil also has soothing benefits when applied topically to the psoriatic skin. Try massaging a few tablespoons of olive or coconut oil on your scalp to help loosen plaques and patches during your next shower.

Shampoos

Individuals with psoriasis do not necessarily need to buy special psoriasis shampoos.      Try mixing psoriasis-friendly active ingredients, such as tea tree oil or apple cider vinegar, with your normalising shampoo for a gentle psoriasis remedy. Choose shampoos that contain salicylic acid; a medication that helps the skin peel. Salicylic acid also helps the body heal psoriasis patches faster and remove psoriasis scales. The higher the quantity of salicylic acid a product contains, the stronger effect it will have.

Dietary supplements

Dietary supplements may also help ease psoriasis symptoms from the inside. Vitamin D, fish oil, milk thistle, Oregon grape, aloe vera and evening primrose oil have been widely reported to help ease mild symptoms of this inflammatory disease, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. Of note, it’s critical to only take dietary supplements that do not interfere with other pre-existing inflammatory conditions you may have.

Anti-Inflammatory treatments can spell relief

Itching, scratching, and picking are the worst things for psoriasis because it thrives in areas of irritation and trauma. Anti-itch strategies for scalp psoriasis include shampoos containing menthol, over-the-counter steroid creams, (use for a short period) relaxation techniques, ice packs or cold wraps and for severe itching, prescription medicines. A special anti-itch therapy with active anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and fungicidal ingredients is very helpful in relieving psoriasis symptoms..
